Fisheries Minister Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, today, performed an awkward ritual to close the fishing season.
He visited the beach with an entourage from the ministry and chiefs to draw the curtains down on the fishing season by locking the sea with a huge key.
This was a part of the ritual to announce the close season where fisherfolk are not permitted to go to sea until the time elapses.
This year’s close season will last a month and will be over on 31st August 2021. But the highlight of the entire announcement is how Mrs Elizabeth Afoley Quaye took the huge key and turned it as though he was actually locking a huge door.
That was a ritual to signify that all fishing activities have been closed and will be opened when the close season is over. While Ghanaians find the ritual quite weird and outmoded, it is actually a routine practice by the Gas in the Greater Accra Region.
