A truly gruesome cannibal who fulfilled his childhood dream of murdering, dismembering and eating a woman is walking as a free man – and wants to do it again.
Issei Sagawa let his deep-rooted desires take hold of him in 1981, thirty one years after he first thought his classmates’ thighs looked “delicious”.
The monstrous cannibal claims that the media’s representation of Western women like Grace Kelly is what sparked his cannibalistic fantasies – but instead of sexual desire, he dreamed of eating their flesh, All That’s Interesting reports.
His first victim was Renee Hartevelt, a Dutch student who was studying alongside Sagawa in a Paris university, where the Japanese native had just recently moved.
Sagawa built up a close relationship with Hartevelt and invited her over to his house for dinner multiple times.
He had a failed attempt of killing her once when his gun misfired when her back was turned.
Instead of giving him a moment of clarity Sagawa says he became “even more hysterical,” and knew “he simply had to kill her”.
The next night Hagawa did just that. The gun fired properly this time and young Hartevelt was killed instantly.
A fleeting moment of remorse reportedly turned into an overpowering sense of elation for Sagawa.
He gruesomely recalled: “I thought about calling an ambulance.
“But then I thought, ‘Hang on, don’t be stupid. You’ve been dreaming about this for 32 years and now it’s actually happening!’”
Sagawa then proceeded to violently rape and cut open the Dutch student’s corpse.
“The first thing I did was cut into her buttock,” Sagawa said.
“No matter how deep I cut, all I saw was the fat beneath the skin. It looked like corn, and it took awhile to actually reach the red meat. The moment I saw the meat, I tore a chunk off with my fingers and threw it into my mouth. It was truly a historical moment for me.”
The monstrous cannibal claims that his “ultimate intention was to eat her” and didn’t want to “necessarily kill her”.
He described his impulse as a fetish and said that his desire to devour flesh is simply an extension of the normal sexual desires non-cannibals feel toward their partners.
Two days after Hartevelt’s killing, Sagawa had eaten or frozen most of her pelvic area.
He stuffed her legs, torso, and head into two suitcases and called a cab to dispose of the evidence.
The cab driver was asked to drive to Bois de Boulogne park which featured a secluded lake inside it.
The plan was simple, Sagawa was to walk through the park unnoticed and drop the suitcases into the lake.
Unfortunately for the cannibal, horrified park-goers noticed blood leaking from the suitcases and alerted the police.
“I killed her to eat her flesh,” Sagawa bluntly told the police when questioned.
Issei Sagawa spent the next two years in a French prison awaiting his trial.
When the day finally came, the French judge declared him legally insane and unfit to stand, dropping all charges and ordering him to spend the rest of his life in a mental institution.
But when he was deported back to Japan he was set free.
Due to the charges being dropped, the court documents were sealed – which meant authorities in Japan couldn’t receive them. Leaving them with no choice but to let Sagawa out into the world again.
In 1986, Sagawa walked out of the mental institution and has been a free man ever since.
To this day, he roams the streets of Tokyo, thinking about indulging into his dark past again.
Sagawa said that his drives are at their most pronounced around June when women start to wear more revealing clothing.
He admitted that days ago he saw women “with a really nice derriere” and it made him think that he wanted to eat someone again before he dies.
The cannibal says he knows exactly how he will do it too, adding that he’d lightly boil thin slices of flesh in order to savour the natural flavour of the flesh.
For now though, Sagawa says he is focusing on his creative endeavours – most recently publishing his 20th work named “Extremely Intimate Fantasies of Beautiful Girls.”
In a shockingly deluded statement, Sagawa said that he hopes people who read it will stop thinking of him as some kind of monster.
